Try Email Made in Germany to Thwart Privacy Intrusions
People in the US, who naturally assume that they have some right to privacy, were recently rudely awoken by revelations that the NSA has been actively spying on people within the United States. One of the solutions for protecting privacy is to use services located in other nations that have stricter privacy standards than the United States.
Germany happens to have such standards. To take advantage of this, Deutsche Telekom and three of the biggest providers of email in Germany are offering a service called Email Made in Germany. This service does more than allow users to take advantage of the better privacy laws in Germany. It also utilizes encryption to give maximum protection for data.
Sounding the Alarm
Telecom companies and the NSA have been exchanging data about users for some time now. This has created a great deal of controversy in the United States and, not too surprisingly, it has created a real demand for services that ensure at least some modicum of privacy in a world where agencies that aren’t supposed to spy on US citizens routinely do.
Germany’s strict privacy laws are the first thing that the Email Made in Germany service offers. The email, however, is also encrypted. This means that, for users, there is a tremendous improvement in the overall privacy of the service versus utilizing a service based in the US. Encryption in and of itself provides excellent security, but having encrypted email in another nation provides even more.
Since the revelations about the NSA’s spying program came about, citizens in other nations and even foreign governments have been clamoring to do something about US intrusions into the privacy of their government officials and their citizens. In the European Union, nations are considering constructing their own cloud, which would be protected from intrusion from the outside. Germany itself is actually pressuring the European Union to cancel data sharing agreements with the United States, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Getting Out of the Loop
The Email Made in Germany service was designed specifically to encourage European users to get away from using American email services, such as Google and Yahoo. Citizens of the United States themselves may want to take advantage of this, as well. In order to ensure that the connection is completely encrypted, utilizing a VPN service is another privacy enhancing tool that could greatly decrease the chances of being spied upon by nefarious government agencies.
