You don’t need a particularly strong grasp on history to understand how important civil liberties are. In many ways, they’re the most important thing protecting people from their own governments. With the advent of the digital age, civil liberties have taken on a whole new incarnation. Now digital civil liberties are just as important as all the others. When you consider how important the Internet has become to basic freedoms and civil liberties in particular, it becomes obvious that this amazing feature of modern life must be protected at all costs.
This is the driving thought behind the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Since 1990, EFF has been championing free expression, privacy, and innovation, three essential pillars to the Internet’s continued role in securing freedom for people all over the world. The nonprofit organization has done this through grassroots activism, impact litigation, technology development, and policy analysis. As the use of technology continues to grow, EFF will continue to work diligently to enhance the rights and freedoms that make the Internet as vibrant and powerful as it is.
For nearly 25 years now, EFF has been guarding the Internet from encroachment. Even in the World Wide Web’s earliest days, EFF appreciated that developing technology was something that everyone needed to have access to. Without this access, freedom for all would be slowed or even stopped—two eventualities that are unacceptable to EFF. Over the course of its two-plus decades in existence, EFF has cleared the way for encryption, open source software, file sharing tools, security research and countless emerging technologies. All the while, the organization has remained fiercely independent.
Today, the Electronic Frontier Foundation utilizes attorneys, activities and an exceptional expertise of outstanding technologists to make free speech online possible, fight off illegal surveillance, support technologies that enhance freedom and advocate for both users and innovators alike.
That being said, like all nonprofit organizations, EFF needs funds to continue fighting the good fight. What better time, then, to show your appreciation for all they’ve done?
